How to Extend Battery Life on the BlackBerry Storm
Tags: BlackBerry Storm Battery Life, Blackberry Storm TipsIf you need to get longer battery life from your BlackBerry Storm we have a couple of great ideas which will help.
Longer Battery Life On The BlackBerry Storm Part One - Disable GPS
The GPS is always on by default on the BlackBerry Storm, which means that the GPS service is always draining battery life.
Check if GPS is on by looking below the signal indicators for a circle with two crossed lines, as shown in the image on the right - if there are some waves pointing to the right then the GPS is on.
To turn GPS off:
- Click ‘Options’ in the Manage Connections Menu
- Click ‘Advanced Options’
- Click ‘GPS’
- In the GPS menu change the second item to ‘E999/911 Only’ which will only activate the GPS in case of Emergency
- Set the third GPS menu item box to ‘Disabled’
- Save the settings and go to the main screen
GPS is a battery demanding feature - turning it off should extend battery life a fair bit.
Longer Battery Life On The BlackBerry Storm Part Two - Use An Extended Battery
The Storm comes with a 1400mAh battery as standard, but Seidio have recently announced a 1600mAh battery.
According to the specification the 1400mAh battery provides 360 hours of standby time. Based on this figure the Seido battery should yield 411.4 hours of standby time - that’s an additional 51 hours of standby time or to put it another way 15% more than with the 1400mAh battery.

March 2nd, 2009 9:51 pmIts unbelievable because I havent used the phone at all, and no battery in the afternoon after all night charging the previous night!
Thought this was useful information…
This will be, for many customers, the first Lithium-Ion Battery that they have used, and the most common cause of short battery life that we have experienced on the eForum is that customers have been conditioned to charge their batteries according to the best way to prolong a Nickel-Cadmium type battery. With the older batteries, it was recommend to fully charge the battery, and then let it run completely flat, and repeat this process several times. This is actually harmful to Lithium-Ion batteries, as they will not hold charge as well once they reach below 60% capacity, and if they run completely flat, there is a very good chance that they will not take charge again.
The Storm batteries are all sent out with 25% charge on them – however, due to something called “Digital Memory”, the phone will show the battery as being full, when it is not. These batteries benefit strongly from long consecutive charging periods. We have been recommending via the forum, that during the first week of using the Storm, it is placed on charge overnight, every night, or whenever possible. The benefits of this are cumulative, and everyone on the forum that has followed our overcharging tips have reported battery life increasing from 12 hours standby to 3 days standby.

Hints and Tips to improve Battery Life
Battery life has been tested and will vary depending on how the phone is used. You will get three days’ use if you use it just for email, for example. The Storm is a sophisticated smart phone and can do a lot more and we know customers want to use many of these extra features such as watching films and browsing the web. Like any smart phone it takes battery power to use all of these multi-media functions. There are lots of small things you can do to improve the battery life that together will make a great difference. You can find hints and tips on improving the battery life on your Storm. To access this:
1. Select the main menu on the Storm
2. Swipe down to the “help” option and select it
3. Then select “Power, battery and memory”
4. Finally select the “extend battery life” option – some hints and tips on extending the battery life are listed here. These include:
· Set the backlight to remain on for a shorter period of time
· Reduce the brightness of the back light
· Switch off vibrating alerts
· Lower the volume of sound notifications

May 21st, 2009 3:47 pmI am looking for a resource where I can get some basic answers regarding my Blackberry Storm 9500; some basic questions such as; why does the clock get activated once I connect my battery connection, should it be so? Where can I view the Battery’s usage?
May 25th, 2009 2:42 pmMark
It’s an RTM moment (read the Manual!) for most, however, I found most out by just playing with the options within each application
To answer your questions above, to have the clock come on when charging is an option and can be changed by going into the Clock Application and then pressing the menu key to bring up the Optons available You an change it from the defaul whcih is ‘Display Clock when Charging’ to either ‘Do Nothing’ or ‘Enter Bedside Mode’
To see your battery status, go into Options (the spanner) and press ‘Status’ - the battery remaining is displayed there as a %
Hope this helps.
