The impending BlackBerry Storm is the latest in a series of smartphone devices to include 3G technology. But what exactly is 3G?

It stands for ‘third generation’ and relates to a group of technologies that deliver much faster download and upload speeds for mobile devices. They work by allowing many mobile phones or other wireless devices to communicate on the same frequency without getting confused. So, compared with older systems like the 2G, it allows for the transfer of a bigger amount of data by getting rid of the need to keep each signal separate.

3G works in more places

You should be able to surf the web and make calls from anywhere. In theory, I suppose it might be possible to surf the web if you were shipwrecked a desert Island in the middle of the Pacific (so long as you didn’t soak your 3G Storm when you were swimming for shore) but we wouldn’t recommend you try this!  Joking aside, by utilising 3G technology the Storm mobile will have super fast access to the internet over a vast range of cellular networks all over the world. Giving you the opportunity to do much more in more places.

BlackBerry Storm - Super quick surfing

3G technology allows email attachments and web pages to load twice as fast. You can even check your emails or browse the web while you’re in the middle of a phone call.

Overall 3G networks offer users advantages such as:

* New radio spectrum to relieve overcrowding in existing systems.
* More bandwidth, security, and reliability.
* Interoperability between service providers.
* Fixed and variable data rates.
* Asymmetric data rates.
* Backward compatibility of devices with existing networks.
* Rich multimedia services.
